Description

Big Ideas Simply Explained series uses creative design and innovative graphics, along with straightforward and engaging writing, to make complex subjects easier to understand. These award-winning books provide just the information needed for students, families, or anyone interested in concise, thought-provoking refreshers on a single subject.

Did I expect to see all this in one book? No, but I certainly expected much more in this, it did give some of what I mentioned above, and even things I didn’t expect, but it wasn’t much. Only about 15% of the book was dedicated too that kind of stuff, the 85% rest was just great movies throughout history. This book is a nice way of getting an overview, both historically and analytically. Many of the things mentioned here I already knew about but some (especially about India/sanskrit and other Asian facts) I learnt about through this book. text and bold graphics to chart the development of maths through history, the book explores and explains some of the most complex and fascinating mathematical subjects. Delve into everything from the mathematical ideas and inventions of the ancient world such as the first number systems, magic squares, and the Chinese abacus, through to the developments in mathematics during medieval and Renaissance Europe, to the rise of group theory and cryptography more recently. This book would be a five stars for you if you’re looking for a book to give you movie-recommendations. Famous social psychologists include Stanley Milgram and Philip Zimbardo but have you heard of Robert Zajonc? Robert Zajonc's experiments showed that 'the more you see it the more you like it.' Meaning that we tend to like things that we're familiar with, or that we've been exposed to frequently. For example, you may not like the design of a poster in your classroom, but the more you see it, the more it starts to grow on you. This causes an attitude change on a subconscious level - you can start liking things that you didn't like without even realizing it! (Which is, I suppose, is why advertisements are such an important aspect of marketing) The book breaks down as follows: Introduction, Foundations of Sociology, Social Inequalities, Modern Living, Living in a Global World, Culture and Identity, Work and Consumerism, The Role of Institutions, Families and Intimacies, Directory, Glossary, Index. Within these sections, topics include: Science can be used to build a better world (August Comte), Gemeinshaft and gesselschaft (Ferdinand Tommies), The poor are excluded from the ordinary living patterns, customs, and activities of life (Peter Townsend), The freedom to remake our cities and ourselves (Henri Lefebvre), The modern world system (Immanuel Wallenstein), Culture is ordinary (Raymond Williams), The puritan wanted to work in a calling; we are forced to do so (Max Weber), The iron law of oligarchy (Robert Michels), Religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature (Karl Marx), The time of the tribes (Michael Mafesoli). I really enjoyed this book. It's simplicity is the key to it.I would recommend it to people with at least a passing interest in psychology.I also want to get others in the series. The Literature Book is a fascinating journey through the greatest works of world literature, from the Iliad to Don Quixote to The Great Gatsby. Around 100 crystal-clear articles explore landmark novels, short stories, plays, and poetry that reinvented the art of writing in their time, whether Ancient Greece, post-classical Europe, or modern-day Korea. While I wouldn’t call this book an exhaustive authority, it certainly has the potential to be a valuable and semi-encyclopedic tool in the pursuit of a more advanced literary education. Studious readers are likely to come away with both factual knowledge, as well as a fresh list of works they may be interested in experiencing at length. As with all Dorling Kindersley books this is generously illustrated, with bold graphics of headings, alongside accompanying pictures, plus diagrams and infographics in the chapters themselves. I found this heartening. Just when I was starting to get brain ache, there would be a nice visual place to rest. The book is also quite large, a cross between coffee table size and regular textbook. It has reasonably large text too. All this makes reading it a lot more enjoyable. Each section includes the most prominent figures in each area and the contribution they made. We have such eminent figures as Carl Jung, Abraham Maslow, Viktor Frankl, Carl Rogers, Albert Bandura and of course Sigmund Freud.

Sociologists use the tools and methods of science to understand how and why humans behave the way they do when they interact together in groups.Naturally, the references given are mostly very famous examples (there is a reason certain works have become what we call "classics") but there were some I had never heard of as well. The summaries of the books presented are good but not spoilery while still showing why any given book represents a certain genre or era. As I said, also very good for teens just starting to venture into the field, as well as for those totally unacquainted with the discipline of philosophy, since ideas are broken down into easy-to-digest diagrams. This book tries to give you a general yet also comprehensive idea of human literature since its inception in history to our contemporary era. The Movie Book zooms in on the best cinematic masterpieces of all time and is a must-have for anyone with a passion for films and the history of cinema.
