There’s a much simpler way. It reminds me of the old (made-up) adage where the American Space Programme spent millions developing a pen to write in space when the Russians took pencils. How to Make a Wet Palette – Solution

Ever experienced that the paint on your palette starts to dry out while using it? So in the start everything goes great, but then it starts to clump up? Then it comes to actually using the paint itself. Having been left sitting in water for an hour, what would it now be like? The included palette paper–the venerated “reusable” everlasting hydration membrane–is durable and provides multiple cycles of use before you need to replace it. The RGG palette paper does not crinkle, wrinkle, or curl as some baking paper may do when placed on your wet palette. If, however, you’re a more itinerant hobbyist – perhaps you go to a club, enjoy setting yourself up in your local hobby store or paint with a friend at their house – this may be a bit of an issue for you. If the palette is not watertight, you always run the risk of having your paints or any excess water in the Everlasting Wet Palette dripping out into the bottom of whatever bag you transport your gear in.Now, your palette should be good to go. The paper on top should be wet to the touch, but not be so saturated that there is standing water on top of it. The wet palette size of this palette works like any other: a moist foam pad keeps an overlying paper membrane wet to keep acrylic paint from drying out. In my use, the Army Painter wet palette keeps extends paint for a few days. Because the lid isn’t air tight and does not snap fit to the bottom tray, this palette will need a water refill every so often (2-3 days). I don’t mind, as this works as a reminder that I should either continue painting, or wash out the palette entirely. I’m never allowed to let mold grow 😉. It’s wonderfully practical and thoughtful. The Redgrass Games wet palette has an accompanying extra palette accessory (the “wavy” dry palette) that lets you use washes or mix inks right next to your wet palette. It even acts as a brush rest or holder. Of course, this brand of wet palette is the most expensive on the miniature painting market.

The AP wet palette starter bundle comes with several sheets of a palette paper (which I really like) and a thin foam insert. As with other wet palettes, you use this palette by wetting the foam, placing it in the tray, and laying the palette paper on top. It all fits nicely without any trimming. To make things easier I have measured the usable area on all containers. I hope the below pictogram is ok, I’m not the best at making these so if anyone wants a go at making a better one, please do so. Now, one thing I noticed when dealing with this particular metallic paint was that the palette, not having been watered for a good twenty-odd hours at this point (a working day happened between me stirring my red and starting my silver), was beginning to get a little dry and, as such, did not begin to thin the paint as effectively as it had the previous day when freshly soaked. A wet palette will naturally thin paint. So, using metallic paints on your wet palette will keep them wet longer, but will mess up the way the metallics look on a model. I know I’m not alone in this, I’ve actually seen people try to fix this problem by filling the base with resin and / or large sponges to close the gap between the base and the rim. I have found it hard to get one that was not too high. Just a tiny bit too high and it will start to annoy you when you paint (it feels unnatural to lift your hand up and try to get the paint onto the brush). 7. Easy and comfortable to use

While a soft brush help avoid damaging the palette paper, I found that the hydration membrane for the Everlasting wet palette was very durable. This, of course, shouldn’t be a surprise because as mentioned, this paper is supposed to be last a long time. What’s so special about the RGG long-lasting hydration membrane? For those who don’t know what these are, a painting handle is used to make it easier to hold your miniature while you are painting it. This can be helpful, especially if you are new to painting miniatures, as it can be difficult to hold the miniature steady when you don’t have a good grip on it. A painting handle will also help you avoid getting paint on your hands. The reason a semi-permeable layer is added is so the paint can absorb the water but the sponge/tissue won’t absorb the paint. For example, if you over thin metallic paint, you won’t be able to cover your miniature surface. The resulting reflective sheen you wanted to create may appear splotchy and streaky. For best results, try not to thin your metallic paints. I painted this 3D-printed miniature base using simple techniques with Vallejo Model Air metallic steel paint. The two Smaller containers are useful little alternatives if you are low on desk area. But this comparison above should give you an idea of how much space your container will take up when compared to retail options. You can always sketch these out on a sheet of paper before buying to test the area you have available. Because the absorbent foam was thin and flat, and the hydration paper stayed flat throughout my use. No major bubbles or wrinkles formed that disrupted my colors or workflow. Does color bleed through the paper? The plastic bottom tray and cover of the palette is a nice upgrade from the v1 version or painter lite, which required an elastic band to keep the palette closed. The airtight TPE seal around the cover edge fits snugly (maybe a bit too much) over the bottom palette tray. It’s even water tight (or seems like it). RedGrass Games took the miniature painting community by storm with their hobby product line.

As an additional expansion option, Redgrass Creative also offers glass inserts for the wet palettes, which are particularly suitable for oil paints. If you want to switch to the Everlasting Wet Palette V2, it might make sense to retrofit the old palette with a glass insert. Value My trusty 15 year old Masterson Sta-Wet Handy Palette next to the RGG palette is still going strong. Will the RGG Wet Palette hold up the same? We’ll see in a few years, won’t we?

It may seem like a bit of a steep price, especially if you’re a beginner, but if you’re wanting to take your painting to the next level, this is not a product you can dismiss. RedgrassGames Everlasting Wet Palette Review – Final Thoughts Not big issues, but small things that made sure I never loved those DIY solutions. As time goes, I have found that having enough time for my hobby is the biggest concern.
