Description

Rosie Revere and the Raucous Riveters is the first in a unique and exciting series of chapter books for children, parents, and teachers who want to make STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fun. I find it helpful that there’s a lot of extra information about the female riveters at the end of the book as well as an encouragement for kids to talk with older people and learn their stories.

This was a delight and a surprise. Maybe my expectations were just very low because my daughter brings home so many random, forgettable books from the library. Based on the title and cover art, I expected this to be a bland little girls-can-be-engineers-too, girly power kind of book. And then it turned out to be more than that and better than that, and I was delighted! Now perhaps if Andrea Beaty's presented poetry had been a trifle less awkward and stumbling (and with that, also not so utterly frustratingly distracting) and if her oh so very much important messages had been less in one's proverbial face and thus not so maddeningly preachy (about being courageous, about not being afraid of making mistakes, about trying again and again if and when disasters do occur, and yes, these are indeed important lessons for EVERYONE), I might have actually enjoyed Rosie Revere, Engineer.Sometimes, Rosie’s weirdest ideas made her think in a new way or solved tiny bits of a big problem.” Will no doubt inspire conversations with children about the benefits of failure and the pursuit of dreams.”— School Library Journal

I had a lot of fun reading “Rosie Revere and the Raucous Riveters”, the first chapter book in a new series, “The Questioneers”, by Andrea Beaty. This lyrical text follows Rosie who absolutely loves engineering and inventing. Children can get to know Rosie and be inspired by her vision. A vital text, not only to ignite passions about design and technology, but to learn about problem solving and perseverance. It is also a super introduction to the Questioneers, a group of children who are role models in different fields, from science to illustration to engineering. Andrea Beaty has a distinctive poetic style and is supported by David Roberts’ technical illustrations. Links and themes: Top Twinkl Tip ~ If you want a fun-filled lesson for Engineering Week, why not put a few of the resources from the above list together along with a reading of the Rosie Revere Engineer! The premise of the book is simply adorable and hilarious. Rosie Revere is precious and should be protected at any and all cost! She loves to build things trinkets, gizmos, and gadgets in secret – why in secret? Rosie was once enthusiastic about her inventions and showed it off to everyone and anyone, but one day, she built an invention for her favorite uncle, but he laughed at her and she curbed her passion in and only does it in secret. It wasn't until her great-great-aunt Rose (Rosie the Riveter) visits her and teaches her that the only failure is the failure to continue – to quit. Great story. Loved all the messages of working together, stopping to think, perseverance, helping others, and thinking outside the box. I could not put this book down. I honestly read it all this morning in one sitting. The story is a great combination of funky inventions (e.g. SnakeAway, a snake-scaring machine), quirky characters (like Rosie’s great-great-aunt flying on a cheese-copter or her joyful friends, the Raucous Riveters, who built airplanes during the World War II), as well as great messages (dealing with pressure, the power of friendship, overcoming fears). In addition, the book pictures the real process of engineering: brainstorming, research, sketching ideas, design, making prototypes, testing and redesign based on performance. Andrea Beaty is the author of a series of books about curious classmates; Architect Iggy, Scientist Ada and Engineer Rosie. Illustrated by the Scottish illustrator, David Roberts, the books tell the stories of hopelessly curious children who overcome hurdles to pursue their passions. Rosie Revere dreams of becoming a great engineer. She creates wonderful gadgets and gizmos - but only when no one is watching. She's kept her inventions a secret ever since, when she was very small, her uncle Zookeeper Fred laughed at the special cheese hat she designed him to keep snakes at bay. But then great-great-great aunt Rosie, in her red-and-white spotted headscarf, appears on the scene, and helps Rosie to understand that sometimes you've got to risk failure before you can find success.

Enter the Blue River Riveters. They have an emergency that they need Rosie’s help with. One of the riveters, June, is a painter and always participates in the Art-a-Go-Go. This year, though, she has both of her wrists in casts. How can she paint like that? It’s up to Rosie to build a solution. Rosie dreams of becoming a great engineer when she grows up. She loves to invent gizmos and gadgets, including a hot dog machine and helium pants. She creates a snake-repelling hat for her Uncle Fred. There is a Spelling Seed session for every week of the associated Writing Root.

Rosie Revere loves to help people solve their problems. That’s why she’s trying to invent something to help her Uncle Fred with his problem. He’s a zookeeper and all the snakes just seem to be drawn to him. He can’t keep them away. Rosie has gone through 6 generations of her Snakeaway idea, but still hasn’t found the answer. But that’s okay, because Rosie knows you only fail if you stop trying. These books are fun without being preachy and yet teach the kids something important. Do give these books a try.
