About this deal

And the plot is an immersive, fascinating tale of life, loss, love, bravery, survival, tragedy, romance, adventure, religion, politics, war, gender fluidity, sacrifice, revenge, the roles of women in 17th century Europe, and the ins and outs of living on a ship. The Ghost Ship is the third book in the series following the fortunes – and misfortunes – of various generations of the Joubert family.

It feels like a slight departure from previous Kate Mosse books, as a large chunk of the story takes place at sea. Gripping, thrilling, a spectacular work of scholarly reimagining, The Ghost Ship is a beautiful book about two women, about love, courage, suffering, and a world in which everything was on a knife edge. But many sides of slavery here we see the hidden side that not all slaves were black and not all slavers were white. We are left hanging and wondering what became of her and if she really did overcome her struggles and live life on her own terms.Their love of exploration and freedom draws them together, and their love story was so tender and sweet. Much of the novel takes place on board ship, where murder, storms and pirates mirror Louise’s inner torments.

This is a novel that is both thrilling and sensitive, romantic and brutal – one that you can really get your teeth into.Recommended for anyone who enjoys historical fiction with a strong female protagonist (and pirates). The writing was so well executed: rather short sentences, nothing florid, but they all carried out all emotions and intentions.

Her ambition takes her on a wild adventure across the high seas; one involving betrayal, revenge and romance, and captaincy of the feared Ghost Ship, which patrols the seas around the Canary Islands, accosting pirate and slave ships. There is still a flavor of that, but I appreciated a new setting and some distance from those events. I know four stars may not seem like enough based on my review but for me it is a definite reread and there will be a physical copy with lots of notes and annotations in my future. Mosse heeft voor mij ook een minder gekend stukje geschiedenis aangesneden en het is altijd leuk iets bij te leren tijdens het lezen van een spannende roman. The sequel to The City of Tears, The Ghost Ship is the third novel in The Joubert Family Chronicles from bestselling author Kate Mosse. When the worst happened and Louise found herself cornered by those who despised her, her life in danger, the loyal Giles stepped up.

Inspired by real-life female pirates, Anne Bonney and Mary Read, The Ghost Ship is the powerful story of Louise Reydon-Joubert, a women who risks everything to protect those she loves. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Because I was anticipating a more grounded narrative, I was constantly thinking about the story as a story rather than being immersed in it. I loved the Languedoc trilogy but the Joubert Chronicles have just got more and more disappointing as they progress.

As with the other women in her family, Louise is a formidable character: bold, fearless and with a will of iron. Overall, The Ghost Ship is another beautifully written, incredibly enthralling third addition to The Joubert Family Chronicles by Mosse that grabs you from the very first page and does an outstanding job of blending historical facts with fiction that is both enlightening, romantic, and wonderfully compelling. In an age where women weren’t really even allowed on a ship, let alone be allowed to captain one, her speedy rise to Captain just didn’t feel believable. With her inheritance, she purchases one of Cornelia's boats (the Old Moon) and, in a most unladylike fashion, actually wants to be on the ship. and whilst it would no doubt be beneficial to understand the backstory this can also be read on its own.
