About this deal

The law courts refused to hear, or the case was delayed because Lord Grey prevented Owain's letter from reaching the King. Glyndŵr served as a squire to Henry Bolingbroke (later King Henry IV), [6] son of John of Gaunt, at the short, sharp Battle of Radcot Bridge in December 1387. As scion of the House of Mathrafal and a descendant of the House of Dinefwr he combined the lions onto a counter-charged Red and Gold field.

The banner would have been used during the early Middle Ages and later by the Talbot dynasty who inherited the arms. A’r hyn yr ydym eu hangen yn awr ydy dwy wyl gyhoeddus (banc) i ddathlu ein cymreictod: sef Mawrth 1af – gwyl Ddewi, a Medi 16eg – Gwyl ddathlu Owain Glyndwr. A highly fictionalized Glyndŵr is featured in the popular YA book series The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater as Owen Glendower. It has been extensively rebuilt since those days, and it is now a hub for community, historical and cultural activities 4 (source: Owain Glyndwr Heritage Centre).

His troops inflicted a series of defeats on the English forces and captured key castles across Wales, rapidly gaining control of most of the country. Dwi’n dweud hyn, gan nad ydy’r Marxist Leninistiaid i lawr yn y Baw yn fodlon rhoi mwy o wyliau cyhoeddus i ni.

Owain Glyndŵr - Wikipedia

Sources state that Glyndŵr was under threat because he had written an angry letter to Lord Grey, boasting that lands had come into his possession, [6] and he had stolen some of Lord Grey's horses, and believing Lord Grey had threatened to "burn and slay" within his lands, he threatened retaliation in the same manner. In 1404 he created the first Welsh Parliament in Machynlleth to rule an independent nation, and it was then he was proclaimed the Prince of Wales.

The Welsh believed that their prince should, rightfully, be Welsh, so they chose Owain Glyndŵr as the man to take the crown. It has become somewhat of an icon for people that want Welsh independence, and people protesting in general. Watch: Michael Sheen questions whether the title of Prince of Wales means anything to King Charles and William". There are many folk tales of Glyndŵr donning disguises to gain an advantage over opponents during the rebellion. Wales would extend as far as the rivers Severn and Mersey, including most of Cheshire, Shropshire and Herefordshire.

BBC Wales - History - The Golden Dragon

Insurrection in Wales: the rebellion of the Welsh led by Owen Glyn Dwr (Glendower) against the English Crown in 1400. The bard Iolo Goch, himself a Welsh lord, visited Glyndŵr in Sycharth in the 1390s and wrote a number of odes to Owain, praising his host's liberality and writing of Sycharth, "Rare was it there / to see a latch or a lock. However, this didn't confer exclusivity to Wales: the dragon reappeared alongside Henry V at the battle of Agincourt (1415).

Glyndŵr managed to escape capture by disguising himself as an elderly man, sneaking out of the castle and slipping past the English military blockade in the darkness of the night. All these things don’t need a flag, but the confidence to fly Glyndwr’s flag is a nod in the direction that other ideas, once ‘heretical’ can become mainstream and accepted. While Glyndŵr sometimes translates for us, on many occasions she talks and is not acknowledged, instead saying something incomprehensible that each individual performer would have to make up. There is a campaign to make 16 September ( Owain Glyndŵr Day), the date Glyndŵr raised his standard, a public holiday in Wales, including by Dafydd Wigley in 2021.
